Whom the Sea Calls
He smiled slightly; she sounded like his little sister. “No you won’t. We were made to float on water, sweetheart.” He kept her legs up and level with the water, letting them lightly rest on his palms under the water.
“Listen, just relax, and I mean, really relax. Maybe tighten your tummy a little bit, that’ll help keep your legs up, but just let yourself float.” He let his hands drift down away from her legs slowly as he spoke, his eyes darting between her face and her legs to make sure they weren’t sinking again.
She listened intently, she didn’t want to sink and get water in her nose or mouth…sea water tasted bad! Nodding a little, she followed his instructions, still a bit frustrated with herself for not remembering how to float. Instead of straining, she straightened out some and let out the breath she held.
His hands were under her, and the water wasn’t deep, plus, she could swim if it came down to it. She let herself go, and almost flinched when she felt her ears go under, but she stayed afloat! Eyes closed, she smiled; she didn’t want to get too excited and lose her position. Quietly, mouth closed and concentrated, she let out a triumphant “hm-hm!”
He watched her carefully for another few moments after her triumphant noise, grinning slightly. With a sigh, he waded a little ways away and went back to floating. Once he was afloat, he let his eyes drift shut and hummed a little bit.
Kai dozed off, lazily floating around in the sun with a contented smile on his face.
